Job description

Professional

  • Provide day to day management of a team of staff working within the service.
  • Work closely with their line manager to ensure the efficient and effective running of their areas of responsibility.
  • Deputise for their line manager when asked to do so and along with other members of the senior team form part of the on call rota over 24/7.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of patient-centred services.
  • Contribute to the successful attainment of national quality and safety objectives.
  • Provide specialist clinical advice and care within designated area responsibility.

Patient Care

  • Take responsibility for the care provided to patients whilst on duty.
  • Ensure that care needs are assessed and programs of care are developed, implemented, evaluated and documented contemporaneously for caseload of patients.
  • Provide professional advice, guidance and support to team members so that they are able to assume responsibility to carry out their roles.
  • Ensure compliance with the safe storage and administration of drugs/medication in accordance with THG policies.
  • Undertake and be proficient in the relevant clinical skills and be able to provide/undertake supervision/assessment of other members of the nursing team in the day to day working practices.
  • Promote high standards of individuals’ privacy and dignity, wishes and beliefs, involving them in shared decision making.
  • On a shift by shift basis, be responsible for minimising the risks of infections and for the implementation of the relevant Code of Practice for prevention and control of infection.

Communication and Information

  • Be able to recognise the need for referral to statutory bodies (e.g. safeguarding, DoLS, MHA, MCA, etc) and ensure documentation is completed as necessary.
  • On identification of concerns, raise through the appropriate line management structures, if necessary, referring to the THG “whistleblowing” procedures.
  • Report to line manager any issues regarding the clinical or attitudinal performance of nurse staff members.
  • Maintain effective communication of patient care and other essential information with the internal/external members of the nursing and multi-disciplinary team.
  • Be able to communicate difficult, sometimes complex and emotive information e.g. breaking bad news etc. effectively and, when appropriate, support and coach junior staff in doing the same.
  • Communicate effectively via verbal, written and electronic routes and maintain robust processes to ensure the cascade of information to the team and the engagement of team members with plans and objectives.
  • Ensure accurate and legible record keeping in accordance with local policies and NMC guidelines within own practice and sphere of responsibility.
  • To act as chair for meetings as appropriate.

Supervisory and Management Responsibilities

  • Take charge of ward/unit on a daily basis when on duty.
  • To be part of the senior nurse on-call rota.
  • Assist line manager in the cascade of information and key information and key messages to the nursing team in timely manner.
  • To encourage and promote engagement in high standard of quality (tissue viability, etc).
  • To partake in the on-call system as required.
  • Adhere to the THG complaints and concerns procedures with regard to written and verbal complaints and escalating cases to line manager or higher when required. Where necessary, develop remedial action plans and evidence the implementation of these.
  • Allocate workload and, where appropriate, delegate responsibilities amongst the team.
  • Working with their line manager, be responsible for the effective use of-rostering to ensure optimum skill mix for the acuity/dependency of patients. This included being responsible for the management and staff changes to cover shift out of hours as part of this role.
  • Accountable for the monitoring and initial management of sick absence, return to work interviews for nursing team in accordance with sickness absence management policy.
  • Assist the line manager to maintain efficient provision of resources such as clinical equipment and budget.
  • Ability to tackle poor performance and standards of poor attitude and behaviour in a support approach and, where necessary, initiate ad-hoc meetings for staff to discuss performance. Matters to be escalated to line manager when necessary.
  • Ensure all staff in their area, work to the Professional Code of Conduct and/or THG standards.
  • Ensure all Annual Development Reviews (ADRs) and Personal Development Plans are completed annually for staff within reporting chain.
  • To manage a caseload of staff clinical supervisions, undertaken and maintained 1-2 monthly or as directed by the line manager.
  • When on duty, have responsibility for health and safety within sphere of responsibility (e.g. fire, COSHH, violence and aggression, mental capacity act etc.),     leading by example ensuring a working culture of the team which conducive to good health, safety and security practices.
  • Report all accidents and/or untoward incidences as per THG clinical risk Datix system to follow management procedure.
  • Contribute to the security of the working environment.
  • Ensure the safe handling and storage of patients’ valuables and property.
  • Ensure systems in place to ensure specialist clinical equipment are checked as needed.
  • Assist their line manager to maintain efficient control of the nursing budget.
  • Always act as a positive role model for all nursing staff and act proactively in embracing change as and when required.
  • As appropriate, undertake a range of clinical and non-clinical investigations.
  • Develop action plans following audits, investigations, inspections and care reviews.
  • Involvement in developing and auctioning of audit schedule as necessary.
  • As appropriate, involvement in medication management systems including liaison with Pharmacy.
  • Review and write local protocol as required.
